1. Read: Psychological Sense of Community 


2. Read/See: Communitas


3. Propose a Community Model: AS A TEAM propose your own community model (in writing) based on both the reading and diagram, change it or expand it to incorporate restrictions or enhancements that the online space, mobile devices, bluetooth technology, multitouch devices, etc. can bring to community interaction, add it to this post's comments sections (as a team).


4. Diagram Your Community Model: AS A TEAM design and post to both of your blogs a diagram of your model. This is an exercise in information architecture and should clarify both for you and viewers the interaction and function of your model. This should be well considered and well designed as it will feature in future presentations of your project.


5. Start Research & Brainstorming: When researching, brainstorming and defining the parameters below, please work together and explore mind-mapping, basic outlining and diagramming to lay down the foundation of your research. This can be done loosely but do it largely, butcher-paper and white boarding sessions (photograph those white boards and papers and blog post) are expected. Define your chosen activity's parameters such as:
  • physical boundaries
  • what's/who's involved
  • equipment needs
  • demographics
  • individual and community wants and needs
  • symbols (uniforms, tools, markers of the activity's community)
  • motivations, etc.

    OUR COMMUNITY MODEL
    (for re-using and recycling)



    MEMBERSHIP
    -Being a part of the group, contributing, furthering the group's ultimate goal. All of the members in a community have the same principle values and concerns.

    -In our case, everyone who is involved in our community are committed to a sustainable lifestyle, they desire to have the lowest impact on the environment possible, and they have an interest in re-using objects and materials by sharing, trading, and giving to extend the life of an artifact. Joining this group can be as easy as using your personal PDA or iPhone app to connect and contribute to the community.

    INFLUENCE
    -Members of a group must feel empowered to have influence over what a group does (otherwise they would not be motivated to participate), and group cohesiveness depends upon the group having some influence over its members.

    -The more people that participate and contribute objects to be re-used or repurposed, the larger the inventory gets. With each contribution, the amount of trading and re-using increases, boosting the community's affluence. This inventory will be accessible through the web space and the iPhone app.

    INTEGRATION AND FULFILLMENT OF NEEDS
    -That which is desired and valued. Members of groups are rewarded in various ways for their participation, which is referred to as person-environment fit.

    -If you need something specific, the community can band together to help make it happen. For example, if someone needed 100 paper towel rolls for an art project, they could simply post their request, and then people could come together to produce the materials needed for that individual. The speediness and wide-communication range of posting your request to a greater community will facilitate a higher success rate of having your needs met.

    SHARED EMOTIONAL CONNECTION
    -Members who are deeply passionate about the subject matter are more inclined to participate. The deeper the emotional connection that a member of a group has will have a direct correlation to the amount of time and energy that is put forth into it.

    -Our members will feel good about environmental sensibility and make ethical decisions in an effort to better our world.

    RELATIONSHIPS
    -The basic units of community, through which people establish the trust and understanding needed to rely upon each other.

    -Connections that are built through our online community will be dependent on the web. These connections would not normally be facilitated without the web as a catalyst. Through these relationships formed in the web space component of our community, individuals will be able to share their artifacts and findings to strengthen the validity of the community and expand the object inventory. The amount of success that will occur in the community will correspond with the member's interactions and reliance on one another.

    LIFE GOALS
    -People's articulation of what matters most to them. This is often things like helping other people, having an impact, etc.

    -Having a positive impact on the environment will be a main concern of the individuals of this community. They will be drawn together by their common pursuit of re-using and recycling as a means of furthering an objects life beyond its termination in a landfill. Their interest in ethical sensibility will help to bring them together and build a strong community of passionate people with the same enthusiasm for eco-friendly lifestyles.

  2. We have determined that five things are necessary to have a successful community.

    The first and foremost is a sense of belonging or membership. This gives you a status, which can result in pride, both on the side of the community and individual. Also, it lets the community become more than just acquaintances, they become friends and family.

    The second is the needs and life goals that drive an individual to join the community. Whether it is for personal, entertainment, or financial needs, the community exists to fill in the voids in people’s lives. Also, the learning of skills and knowledge is a need that people have when they form a community.

    Emotional interaction is the third necessity to form a perfect community. Sharing equipment, high fives, feelings and most importantly ideas lies at the basis of a healthy community. Within sharing ideas, whether it is person to person, or over the Internet, there becomes a snowball effect, where ideas come together to create a product greater than the sum of its parts. Sharing ideas also helps the spread movement in thought, which relates to our next idea.

    Community awareness is also necessary to create a good community. This means people invested in the community have to be aware of trends and updates, as well as the historical context of the community. People also have to be aware of the environment in which their community exists. This environment can be either geographical or virtual. Both play an important part in bringing the community together.

    Lastly, there is activism. If a member of a community does not act upon his beliefs, he will feel useless. Participation and change help keep communities alive. Especially helping make improvements and have a say in the community makes the person believe that they have the power to influence the community in a positive manner.

  3. Our community includes local bands/musicians who all play rock music. By local, we mean the Kansas City metropolitan area.
    Musicians/bands in this community have a few things in common. They all have personal and professional relationships. They understand each other’s needs and goals.
    Everyone in this community desires a sense of well being. They all want to be safe and hope they can rely on others to give them tips on unsafe venues. They all also desire a sense of belonging. They need relationships in the field to compare and contrast their experiences.
    Of course they all share a similar life goal, to become successful rock’n’roll musicians/bands and to share their musical talents with others who are interested.
    People in the rock community want to have a choice whether or not to help other bands and musicians. They will want to put their band ahead of another band first, but then possibly share their experiences.
    Finally, when it comes to their needs, people in this community constantly need material things, whether it is guitar strings or new speakers. They may need a way to get these things without sacrificing a lot of time or money.

  5. The focus of this model is relationships
    As the individual along with his or her history and life goals interact and intertwine with the structure and agency within the site, relationships emerge. The newly blossomed relationships potentially result in a more powerful impact on society, especially with community gardening as the focus.

    The ability to control or make decisions within the community will be guided organically by the participants. Those who are active and post or upload often will naturally and likely carry the most influence within the community.

    All are necessary contributors. Some participants may be more focused on gardening as a hobby while others consider gardening a profession. Some are proponents to voluteering within the community, others are just longing to learn. All are grounded by a common interest in gardening.
